A common element - [
A common element
It is one of the four most common elements in our bodies. It is the most common element in the crust[外壳] of the earth. Water is made up partly of it. So is sugar. Fires will not burn without it. It is a colorless gas. Do you know what it is?
You are sure to know that the answer is oxygen. It is the best “jointer” of all the elements. But not all the oxygen in the world is in compounds[化合物]. In the air, a great deal of oxygen is not joined with any other element.
It is a very good thing that there is a great deal of oxygen in the air, for what we need to breathe is oxygen. All other animals need it too. So do plants.
There is no easy way of separating oxygen from the rest of the air around us. It is much easier to get it from one of its compounds.
In oxygen, fires burn much better than in air. In a bottle of oxygen a candle[碳] will burn much faster than usual. And the flame will be much brighter.
High above the earth there is less air and therefore[虽然] less oxygen.
That is why aviators[宇航员], going high above the earth, carry oxygen bags with them. When people are very ill, they are often given extra[额外的] oxygen to breathe. It is a great help some of the compounds and mixtures it is hidden in.
From what has been said above, it can be seen that a common element like oxygen is indispensable[必不可少] to living things.
Air material
The air pushes up and down and sideways. We call this push “air pressure”.
Scientists often need to know what the air pressure is. To find it out they use barometers[气压表]. “Barometer” means “pressure measure[测量]”.
If you have a barometer it will tell you what the weather is going to be. Scientists have found out that when the air pressure is getting weather is likely to be clear. Barometers are the weather-man’s most important instruments[仪器].
There is another very common use of barometers. The higher you go above the surface of the earth, the less the air pressure is. There is less and less air above you to do the pushing. Mountain climbers often carry barometers to tell them how high they have climbed. Aviators always have barometers in their planes to tell them how high in the air they are.

The world’s first compass - [
The world’s first compass
That the world’s first compass was invented by the Chinese people is a well-known historical fact.
Many centuries ago, the people of China made the discovery that natural magnets have attracting properties[性质] and that a freely suspended[悬挂] magnetized bar always points north and south. Thus they found that such an instrument[仪器] could be used for the purpose of determining[决定] direction..
It was recorded in ancient books that the earliest compass was shaped like a spoon and mounted [安置]on a graduated plate. About the end of the eleventh century the Chinese people used the compass in navigation. In the twelfth century a compass of the floating-needle type came into use. It was recorded that this early sea-going compass was in use on Chinese ships up to the seventeenth century.
From the Chinese the Arabs learned to make compasses and to use them in navigation. The Arabs in turn introduced the compass to Europe. In the bands of the Chinese, Arabs and Europeans, the great invention of the ancient Chinese was further developed. That is how the compass finally reached its present[相当] perfection.
Magnets
Do you know what magents do? Magnets pick up things made of iron or steel.
The ends of a magnet are called poles. It has been proved[证明] by experiment that one end of the magnet always points to hte north and is called the "N" pole. The other end always to the south and is called the "S" pole.
if the N pole of one magnet is held toward the N pole of another, the magents will push away from each other. If the N pole of one magnet is held toward the S pole fo another, the magnets will pull together.
This is why one magnet will sometimes pick up another magnet and why sometimes it will not.
You may wonder why the magnet’s poles point north and south. the fact that the carth has two magectic poles tells us the reason. The two poles of the earth attract the poles of all magnets.

Evaporation [
Evaporation [
Liquids evaporate at all temperatures. But heating speeds up evaporation. The hotter a liquid is, the faster it evaporates. The colder a liquid is, the slower it evaporates. Different liquids have different rates[率] of evaporation. Gasoline evaporates faster than water, yet water does not evaporate so slowly as oil.
When water and most other liquids are heated, they boil. That is, some of the heated liquid changes to a vapour[蒸汽]. In a container[容器] open to the air, a liquid cannot be heated hotter than its boiling point. If you increase the heat under boiling water, the water boils faster. But the temperature of the water stays the same.

The sun, the moon and the stars - [
The sun, the moon and the stars
The sun looks like a shiny gold plate, but it is really a big ball. It is always glowing[发热]. Its flames[火焰] are very much hotter and bigger than any fire on earth. The sun has a family. It is the biggest member in the family.
The moon is a ball, too, like the sun and the earth. Sometimes it looks as round as a plate, sometimes it looks like half a plate, or like a thin slice of yellow melon. But whether you can see all of it or not, the moon is always round. Part of it is dark because it is always turned away from the sun. The moon has no light of its own. Moonlight is only sunlight shining on the moon.
The moon is much smaller than the sun, even smaller than the stars. As the moon is nearer to us, it looks bigger. All day the stars in the sky, but the light from the sun are so bright that you cannot see them. Stars look as tiny[渺小] as pin-heads[针头], but some are even bigger than the sun. The sun looks big because it is closer than the other stars. The farther away a thing is, the smaller it looks, even if it is really very big.

Gravity[
Gravity[重力]
If the earth is a ball, why don’t we fall off? The reason is rather simple. It is because of gravity.
Gravity is a strange force. When you slip on something, you never go up into the air, but instead, you always fall down to the ground.
Things fall to the earth because the earth pulls them to it just as a magent[磁铁] pulls needles. The attraction of the earth for all bodies is called gravity.
You may throw a ball into the air, and if you are very strong it will go up high. But it won’t stay there all the time. As gravity pulls it, it falls right back to the earth again. So gravity always keeps everything on earth.
Because of gravity, water flows on the earth’s surface. With gravity, we can walk, run and do lots of other things. Just as, we need air for life, so we need gravity for work.
Gravity and Spaceships
Even if you are a good high-jumper, you can jump only about seven feet off the ground. You cannot jump any higher because the earth pulls you hard. The pull of the earth is called gravity.
Since there is gravity, water runs downhill. When you throw a ball off the earth as it whirls[旋转 ]around.
You can easily find out the pull of the earth. If you weigh yourself, you will know how much gravity is pulling you.
Then, can we get away from the earth and go far out into space? Now, you can do it, because spaceships have been invented. The space-ship will go to fast that it can escape the earth’s gravity and carry you into space.

SERVE THE PEOPLE - [唐朝国庆的博客网]
SERVE THE PEOPLE
This speech was delivered by Comrade Mao Tse-tung at a memorial meeting for Comrade Chang Szu-teh(Comrade Chang Szu-teh was a soldier in the Guards Regiment of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. A member of Communist Party who loyally served the interests of the people, he joined the revolution in 1933, took part[参加] in the Long March and was wounded in service.[公伤] On September 5, 1944, when making charcoal in the mountains of Ansai County, northern Shensi, he was killed by the sudden collapse of a kiln.), held by departments directly under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China[中共中央直属机关].
September 8th 1944
Our Communist Party and the Eighth Route and New Fourth Armies led by our Party are battalions[营;大军] of the revolution. These battalions of ours are wholly dedicated[奉献] to the liberation of the people and work entirely in the people and work entirely in the people’s interests[pl.利益].Comrade Chang Szu-the was in the ranks[一员] of these battalions.
All men must die, but death can vary in its significance. The ancient Chinese writer Szuma Chien(Szuma Chien, the famous Chinese historian of the 2nd century B.C., was the author of the historical Records. The quotation comes from his “Reply to Jen Coaching’s letter.”) said, "Though death befalls all men alike, it may be heavier than Mount Tai or lighter than a feather."To die for the people is heavier than Mount Tai, but to work for the fascists and die for the exploiters and oppressors is lighter than a feather. Comrade Chang Szu-teh died for the people, and his death is indeed heavier than Mount Tai.
If we have shortcomings, we are not afraid to have them pointed out and criticized [5], because we serve the people. Anyone, no matter who, may point out our shortcomings. If he is right, we will correct them. If what he proposes[提议] will benefit[益处] the people, we will act upon it. The idea of “better troops and simpler administration” was put forward by Mr. Ting-ming(Li Ting-Ming, an enlightened[开明] landlord of northern Shensi Province, was at one times elected Vice-Chairman of the Shensi-Kansu-Ningsia Border Region Government.), who is not a Communist. He made a good suggestion which is of benefit to the people, and we have adopted it. If, in the interests of the people, we persist[坚持] in doing what is right and correct what is wrong, our ranks will surely thrive[繁荣].
We hail from all corners of the country and have joined together for a common revolutionary objective. And we need the vast majority of the people with us on the road to this objective. Today, we already lead base areas(This was the total population of the Shensi-Kansu-Ningsia Border Region and all other Liberated Areas in northern, central and southern China.) with a population of 91 million, but this is not enough; to liberate the whole nation more are needed. In times of difficulty we must not lose sight of our achievements[成绩] must see the bright future and must pluck up our courage. The Chinese people are suffering; it is our duty to save them and we must exert ourselves in struggle. Wherever there is struggle there is sacrifice[牺牲], and death is a common occurrence. But we have the interests of the people and the sufferings of the great majority a heart, and when we die for the people it is a worthy death. Nevertheless[不过], we should do our best to avoid[职务] unnecessary sacrifices. Our cadres must show concern[关怀] for every soldier, and all people in the revolutionary ranks must care for each other, must love and help each other.
Form now on, when anyone in our ranks who has done some useful work dies, be he soldier or cook, we should have a funeral ceremony and a memorial meeting in his honour. This should become the rule. And it should be introduced among the people as well. When someone dies in a village, let a memorial meeting be held. In this way we express our mourning[悲痛] for the dead and unite[团结] all the people.
